Abacavir, dolutegravir, and lamivudine tablets
What exactly are the three drugs known as abacavir, dolutegravir, and lamivudine?
The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), also known as the virus that can cause acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), can be treated using a combination medication that contains abacavir, dolutegravir, and lamivudine (AIDS). A cure for HIV or AIDS cannot be found with the combination of abacavir, dolutegravir, and lamivudine.
Adults and children who weigh at least 22 pounds are suitable candidates for treatment with abacavir, dolutegravir, and lamivudine (10 kilograms).
It is not recommended to use abacavir, dolutegravir, or lamivudine by itself in patients who have developed resistance to specific types of medication.
The uses of abacavir, dolutegravir, and lamivudine that are not included in this medication guide are also possible with these drugs.
Warnings
If you have ever had an adverse response to any drug that contains abacavir, or if you have a gene variant known as the HLA-B*5701 allele, you should not use this medicine. Do not use this medication if you have moderate or severe liver disease, or if you are also taking dofetilide, since both of these conditions make it dangerous for you to do so (Tikosyn).
If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction while taking this medication: fever; rash; nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or stomach pain; a general feeling of illness, extreme tiredness, or body aches; shortness of breath, cough, or sore throat; stop taking this medication immediately and contact your doctor as soon as possible.
If you have suffered from hepatitis B and stop taking abacavir, dolutegravir, and lamivudine, the infection might return or become more severe. It's possible that you'll need to have regular testing of your liver function throughout the next few months.
Before beginning to use this medication
If you have an allergy to abacavir, dolutegravir, or lamivudine, or if you have any of the following conditions, you should not take abacavir, dolutegravir, or lamivudine:
you also take dofetilide (Tikosyn);
you are suffering from liver disease of a moderate or severe severity;
your doctor will test you to see if you have a gene variant known as the HLA-B*5701 allele; alternatively, if you have this gene variation:
Combivir, Dutrebis, Epivir, Epzicom, Tivicay, Trizivir, or Ziagen have previously caused you to have an adverse response in the past.
Please let your doctor know if you have ever been diagnosed with:
liver illness, particularly hepatitis B or C; liver cancer;
difficulties with the heart or other risk factors, including diabetes, smoking, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol; or
renal illness.
You run the risk of developing lactic acidosis, which is an unhealthy accumulation of lactic acid in your blood. If you have other medical concerns, if you are overweight, or if you are a woman, the likelihood of this happening to you is higher. Discuss your concerns with your primary care physician.
Before beginning this therapy, it is recommended that you have a pregnancy test that comes back negative.
If you are pregnant and using any of the following medicationsabacavir, dolutegravir, or lamivudineduring the first 12 weeks of your pregnancy, it is possible that your unborn child might be harmed. Be sure you're not pregnant by using an effective method of birth control, and consult your physician if you do become pregnant.
In order to get your infection under control while pregnant, make sure to take your treatments as directed. If the virus is not managed properly during pregnancy, it is possible for it to be passed on to the baby. It is possible that your name may be included on a register that will monitor the effects of antiviral medication on the unborn child.
It is not recommended that mothers who have HIV or AIDS breastfeed their children. It is possible for your infant to get HIV from you through breast milk even if they do not have the virus at birth.
What is the recommended dosage for abacavir, dolutegravir, and lamivudine?
Read all of the medication guides or instruction papers that come with your medicine, and make sure to follow all of the guidelines that are included on the prescription label. Always follow the directions on the label while taking medication.
It is important to note that Triumeq tablets and Triumeq PD tablets for oral suspension are not interchangeable and should not be used in place of one another. In order to prevent taking the wrong medication, it is imperative that you request the appropriate dose form each time your prescription is filled.
When treating children and adolescents, dosage is determined by weight. Your child's dosage may need to be adjusted if they experience weight increase or loss.
While taking a dispersible pill, it should not be chewed, chopped, crushed, or swallowed. To use, simply dissolve the pill in a little bit of water. Mix it together, and then consume it as soon as possible.
Abacavir, dolutegravir, and lamivudine are all medications that can be used with or without meals.
The antiretroviral combination of abacavir, dolutegravir, and lamivudine each come with their own individual medication guides and warning cards that detail the signs and symptoms of an allergic response. Learn what symptoms to look out for by reading this material and following the links provided. Always be sure you have the Wallet Card on your person.
If you are using abacavir, dolutegravir, and lamivudine in conjunction with certain other medications, you may be required to take an additional daily dose of dolutegravir (Tivicay).
Take all of your HIV medicine exactly as prescribed, and make sure you read all of the instruction manuals that come with it. You should never alter your dosage or stop taking a medication without first consulting your primary care physician. Every individual living with HIV should continue to receive treatment from a medical professional.
Keep at room temperature and away from heat and moisture when storing. Store the pills in the container they came in, together with the moisture-absorbing preservative either in its original packet or in a separate container.
If you have suffered from hepatitis B and stop taking abacavir, dolutegravir, and lamivudine, the infection might return or become more severe. It's possible that you'll need to have regular testing of your liver function throughout the next few months.
What can I expect if I forget to take a dose?
You should take the medication as soon as it is convenient for you to do so, but you should omit the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dosage. It is not recommended to take two dosages at once.
It is important that you have the prescription for your medicine renewed before you run out completely. If you skip many doses of this drug, you run the risk of experiencing a severe adverse response, which might even be deadly, when you resume taking it.
At the time that I am taking abacavir, dolutegravir, and lamivudine, what should I try not to do?
There is no evidence that using abacavir, dolutegravir, or lamivudine can stop the transmission of your condition. Do not engage in unprotected sexual activity, nor should you share utensils such as razors or toothbrushes. Talk to your primary care provider about ways to stop the spread of HIV via sexual activity. It is never a good idea to share needles that have been used for drugs or medicine.
Abacavir, dolutegravir, and lamivudine side effects
If you have signs of an allergic response from two or more of these particular side effect categories, you should contact your doctor as soon as possible:
The first group is fever;
Rash makes up Group 2;
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal discomfort make up Group 3;
Group 4 symptoms include an overarching sense of malaise, excessive weariness, and bodily pains;
Group 5 includes symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing, and a sore throat.
You should never use a drug that includes abacavir or dolutegravir again after you have experienced an allergic response to it because of either of those ingredients. If you have stopped taking abacavir, dolutegravir, and lamivudine for whatever reason, you should consult with your physician before beginning to take these medications again.
Abacavir, dolutegravir, and lamivudine may produce significant adverse effects. You should see your physician as soon as possible if you have:
Other symptoms of an allergic response include blistering or peeling of the skin, redness of the eyes, swelling of the face or neck, and difficulty breathing;

Symptoms of liver disorders include swelling around your abdomen, discomfort in the upper right quadrant of your stomach, a loss of appetite, dark urine, stools that are clay-colored, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
Your immune system may be impacted by abacavir, dolutegravir, and lamivudine, which may result in some adverse effects (even weeks or months after you've stopped taking this medication). Inform your primary care provider if you have:
fever, night sweats, swollen glands, cold sores, cough, wheezing, diarrhea, and weight loss are all symptoms that could indicate a new infection.
symptoms such as difficulty eating or speaking, issues with balance or eye movement, feelings of weakness or prickliness; or
swelling in your neck or throat (enlarged thyroid), abnormalities in your menstrual cycle, and impotence are all symptoms of an enlarged thyroid.
The following are examples of common adverse reactions that may occur when taking abacavir, dolutegravir, or lamivudine:
headache;
lack of sleep; or
trouble sleeping.
What other medications might have an impact on the way abacavir, dolutegravir, and lamivudine work?
It is possible that using certain medications at the same time could have adverse effects. Certain medications have the potential to alter the blood levels of other medications that you take, which may result in an increase in adverse effects or a reduction in the efficacy of the medications.
When taken at the same time, certain medications have the potential to significantly reduce the efficacy of abacavir, dolutegravir, and lamivudine. If you are going to take any of the medications listed below, you should either take your dose of abacavir, dolutegravir, or lamivudine two hours before or six hours after you take the other medication.
antacids or laxatives (such as Maalox, Milk of Magnesia, Mylanta, Pepcid Complete, Rolaids, and others) that contain aluminum or magnesium;
the ulcer medicine sucralfate (Carafate);
medication with a buffer, or
dietary supplements of vitamins or minerals that are rich in calcium or iron (can be taken at the same time with abacavir, dolutegravir, and lamivudine if you take with food).
Many drugs can affect abacavir, dolutegravir, and lamivudine. This include both prescription and over-the-counter medications, in addition to herbal and vitamin supplements. This may not include all of the various interactions that could take place. Talk to your primary care physician about any and all medications you are currently taking, as well as any medications you decide to start or stop taking.
