Benzonatate capsules
What kind of medication is this?
Benzonatate is a cough medication that does not include narcotics. In order for it to be effective, it numbs the throat as well as the lungs, which makes the cough reflex less active. Coughing can be alleviated with the use of benzoate. There are further applications for benzonatate that are not included in this user's guide to the drug that it is used for.
Before I start using this medication, what information is important for my physician to have?
If you have ever had an adverse reaction to benzonatate or drugs that are applied to the skin to numb it, such as tetracaine or procaine, you should not take this medication (found in some insect bite and sunburn creams).
FDA pregnancy category C. It is unknown whether benzonatate will cause harm to an unborn child if it is exposed to it. When you are taking this medicine, you should inform your doctor if you are pregnant or if you intend to become pregnant in the near future. It is unknown whether benzonatate is found in breast milk or whether it may be harmful to a baby who is being breastfed. If you are a breastfeeding mother and intend to use this medicine, you must first discuss it with your physician. Without first consulting a doctor, you should not administer this drug to a kid who is younger than 10 years old. An overdose of benzonatate, particularly in a kid, has the potential to be lethal.
What is the correct way to take this medication?
Follow the instructions given by your doctor to the letter. Use exactly as directed, neither in bigger nor lesser doses, nor for a longer period of time than is advised. Be sure to take your medication exactly as directed on the label. Before administering any cough drug to a kid, you should always see a medical professional. It is possible for extremely young infants to accidentally overdose on cough and cold drugs, which can be fatal. You should not use this medication if you have ever had an adverse reaction to benzonatate or other topical numbing drugs such as tetracaine or procaine. Each dose should be taken with a full glass of water (found in some insect bite and sunburn creams). Never put a benzonatate pill in your mouth or chew on one. Take the tablet in its whole. If you chew or suckle the capsule, you run the risk of causing significant adverse effects for yourself, including numbness in your mouth and throat.
What should I do if I forget a dose?
If you forget to take a dosage, take it as soon as you realize it. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dosage, you should skip the dose that you missed. It is not safe to take more medication in an attempt to make up for a missed dosage.
What other substances could react with this medication?
Before you use benzonatate, you should discuss with your physician whether or not you frequently take any other medications that induce sleepiness (such as cold or allergy medicine, sedatives, narcotic pain medicine, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, and medicine for seizures, depression, or anxiety). They have the potential to amplify the sleepiness as well as the other negative effects of benzonatate. There may be more medications besides benzonatate that can have an interaction with it. Discuss all of the drugs you use with your primary care provider. This covers items purchased with a prescription, those bought over the counter, vitamins, and herbal remedies. Do not begin taking a new medicine before consulting with your primary care physician.
What side effects should I be on the lookout for when using this medication?
Never put a benzonatate pill in your mouth or chew on one. Take the tablet in its whole. If you chew or suckle the capsule, you run the risk of causing significant adverse effects for yourself, including numbness in your mouth and throat. A sense of choking, chest discomfort or numbness, feeling like you could pass out, disorientation, or hallucinations are examples of the serious adverse effects that might occur with using benzonatate. Consuming a benzonatate capsule by mouth and chewing on it or sucking on it may cause some of these negative effects.
Without first consulting a doctor, you should not administer this drug to a kid who is younger than 10 years old. A youngster may lose their life if they consume an excessive amount of benzonatate.
What potential negative reactions may I have to this medication?
If you have any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction, you should seek immediate medical attention: hives; trouble breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or neck.
If you have any major adverse effects, including the following, you should immediately stop taking benzonatate and contact your doctor.
a sensation similar to choking;
discomfort or numbness in the chest;
feeling like you could pass out;
confusion; or
hallucinations.
Consuming a benzonatate capsule by mouth and chewing on it or sucking on it may cause some of these negative effects.
Among the less serious potential adverse effects are:
headache;
dizziness;
drowsiness;
symptoms including nausea, vomiting, and constipation; or
a light scratching sensation or a skin rash.
This list of potential adverse effects is not exhaustive; additional symptoms may also surface.
